Lire et \u00e9crire difficilement ou pas du tout, cela existait dans le monde gr\u00e9co-romain, comme cela existe encore aujourd&rsquo;hui chez nous.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le degr\u00e9 d&rsquo;alphab\u00e9tisation &#8211; bien difficile \u00e0 conna\u00eetre pour les soci\u00e9t\u00e9s antiques &#8211; a fait l&rsquo;objet de r\u00e9centes \u00e9tudes qui ont corrig\u00e9 les visions ant\u00e9rieures tr\u00e8s optimistes (on allait jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 un taux d&rsquo;alphab\u00e9tisation de 80 %).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dans le monde grec, l&rsquo;alphab\u00e9tisation est \u00e0 son apog\u00e9e \u00e0 la p\u00e9riode hell\u00e9nistique o\u00f9 elle pouvait atteindre 20 ou 30 % dans certains centres, du moins pour la population masculine. Dans le monde romain c&rsquo;est sous le Principat qu&rsquo;elle atteint son point culminant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ces chiffres de W.V.
