Diplomatic Exchanges in the Mediterranean"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"background-color: #ffffff;background-position: center center;background-repeat: no-repeat;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-top: 0px;border-width: 0px 0px 0px 0px;border-color:#eae9e9;border-style:solid;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Funded by the CSIC (Spain), in collaboration with the\u00a0Universit\u00e9 de Li\u00e8ge (Belgium) and the\u00a0Universit\u00e9\u00a0d\u2019Aix-Marseille (France):<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><b>The diplomatic exchanges between Islamic Mediterranean and\u00a0Christian European\u00a0powers\u00a0in the Middle Ages:<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><b>New methods for the analysis of\u00a0documents<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Objectives<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main objective is to create an international research group of\u00a0specialists in the study of Arabic and Christian diplomatic documents in the\u00a0Late Middle Ages, and to develop a common methodology combining philological\u00a0and historical perspectives.\u00a0The methodological focus will include specific aspects of the study of Arabic\u00a0diplomatic documents from the Middle Ages, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The establishment of a model (or models) for the diplomatic description\u00a0of the documents based on standardized criteria. The model(s) will be used to\u00a0assess both the Arabic documents and those in Latin or Romance languages.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The establishment of a model (or models) for the paleographic\u00a0description of the documents, with a set of standardized criteria. The\u00a0model(s) will be used to assess both the Arabic documents and those in Latin\u00a0or Romance languages.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The definition of common guidelines for the edition or re-edition and\u00a0translation of the texts in Arabic, in Latin or in other Romance languages,\u00a0their contemporary translations, and contemporary archive materials.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reaching agreement on the processes of revision of the old editions and\u00a0translations available, and a substantial broadening of the study of the\u00a0processes by which they were produced.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The establishment of paradigms for the study of linguistic and\u00a0terminological features, both of the Arabic of the original texts and of the\u00a0contemporary Latin and Romance translations; a linguistic study of the Arabic,\u00a0Latin and Romance languages used in correspondence (dialectology,\u00a0diplomatic and notarial formulae, vocabulary\u00a0&#8230;) and their translations.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Methodology for the selection, evaluation and classification of\u00a0complementary historical materials that provide contextualization (letters in\u00a0Latin, Catalan, Italian and other chancery documents).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Comparison of the practices and arts of chancery used by the various\u00a0Islamic powers in the mediaeval Mediterranean, by consulting the secretarial\u00a0manuals in use at that time as guidelines for the preparation of documents in\u00a0Arabic.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Guidelines for the compilation of a comprehensive record of the individuals\u00a0who took an active or a passive part in diplomatic exchanges and in the\u00a0transmission of documents, or who are mentioned in them.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prosopographic\u00a0studies of the individuals involved;
