I began my studies in Egyptology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit\u00e4t in Munich, where I concentrated on the layout and graphical structure of the signs found in Ancient Egyptian papyri. At the same time, I also completed a B.A. in media informatics (a media-oriented version of computer science). I subsequently complemented these studies with an M.A. in computer science from University of Basel, in which I focused on machine learning and artificial intelligence, and in particular on the use of deep learning (neural networks) in (aerial) images. My knowledge of both Egyptology and computer science will come in handy for my PhD research on the \u2018Crossing Boundaries\u2019 Project, where I will adapt machine learning techniques in order to support the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.philo.ulg.ac.be\/x-bound\/stephan-unter-research-project\/\">classification and reconstruction of fragmentary papyri<\/a>.
